| Biography: Kate was born on January 16, 1974, in Croydon, Surrey, England. Her parents divorced when she was 15 and she has one brother, Nick, who also models.She was first spotted by model agency boss Sarah Doukas as a 14-year-old at JFK airport. Photographer Corinne Day, one of the key players of the early Nineties "grunge" period, spotted her potential and snapped the adolescent topless and wearing a native American headdress. The picture was published on the front cover of style bible The Face, and a Generation X icon was born.Moss originally spearheaded the controversial ''waif'' look which critics claimed encouraged anorexia in impressionable teenagers. Kate has graced such magazine covers as Allure and Harper's Bazaar in the US; Arena, Elle, The Face in the UK, and Vogue in American, British, Australian, Italian, and Brazilian editions. She has even appeared in a few movies, not 2 hour cinema movies, but Ellen von Unwerth's Inferno, Elton John's Something About The Way You Look Tonight and Primal Scream's Kowalski. Peter Lindbergh wanted her in his book 10 Women and Pirelli in their 1994 calendar. Kate has also appeared on the television screen in a documentary entitled Models Close-Up, French and Saunders, a comedy series on the BBC, and MTV's Fashionably Loud as well as Choose or Lose show, and in British Mercury Mobile Phones ads. Kate has practically become a staple in Calvin Klein ads, such as those for fragrances Obsession, CK Be and CK One. In addition to Calvin Klein ads, she has also appeared in ads for Burberry, Cerruti 1881, De Beers Simple Diamond, Dolce and Gabbana, Gianni Versace, L'Oreal, and Yves Saint Laurent. Kate Moss has also acted in music videos of Johnny Cash's Delia's Gone, Primal Scream's Kowalski and Elton John's The Way You Look Tonight.As the millennium began, she cut off her trademark long hair–something she claimed she would never do and emerged with a peroxide blonde wedge. Suddenly all the top designers were clamouring to use her in their ad campaigns. In the end, designer-of-the-moment Tom Ford landed her for the Gucci label. She is presently signed with three different modeling agencies-Women in New York; Marilyn in Milan; and Storm in London. It is reported that Kate made $2.2 million in 1994 and her estimated worth in 2000 was $26.3 million. It is said that Kate charges at least $10,000 per day of modeling. Kate completed one Calvin Klein contract worth $4 million for 100 days of work. She is now in ads for Yves Saint Laurent's perfume Opium. Today she is Britain's wealthiest model, with an estimated fortune of nearly Ј15 million. |
